Since I began traveling to Canada from Nigeria, each trip has its own unique story. Yet, every visit to Mississauga feels less like arriving in a new city and more like returning home or catching up with an old friend. Most of the time, I fly KLM, connecting through Schiphol in Amsterdam to Toronto.
Canada consists of 10 provinces and three territories. Ottawa serves as the nation’s capital, while Toronto is the lively capital city of Ontario – one of those provinces. The total land area of Canada – excluding lakes and rivers – is about 9,093,507 square kilometres. When we factor in freshwater lakes and rivers, the country’s geographical size expands to around 9,984,670 square kilometres, making Canada the second-largest country in the world by total area after Russia.
Beyond being Canada’s economic core, Toronto shares similarities with Lagos; it’s a vast metropolis filled with unique neighborhoods and a globally celebrated cultural center that excels in tech, media and education. The city also reminds me a bit of New York.
Mississauga sits on the western edge of Toronto and has quietly transformed into one of Canada’s most lively multicultural cities with great economic importance.
For many international travelers, Mississauga is often their first introduction to Canada since it houses Toronto Pearson International Airport-Canada’s busiest entry point. Within 25 minutes after landing, visitors can dive into a city that effortlessly blends modern urban life with lovely parks, waterfronts and varied cultural experiences.
The skyline is easily recognizable thanks to the famous Absolute World Towers-nicknamed “Marilyn Monroe Towers.” Their twisting design has gained global recognition and symbolizes Mississauga beautifully. These towers stand proudly against Ontario’s skyline at heights of 50 and 56 stories featuring an hourglass shape that showcases the city’s confidence and innovative spirit.
For visitors from Nigeria who are used to the busy skylines in Lagos and Abuja, these towers inspire admiration for Canada’s dedication to modern architecture and urban planning. Just a short walk away from Celebration Square-which lies at Duke of York Boulevard and Burnhamthorpe Road-is Square One Shopping Centre, Ontario’s largest shopping destination. I’ve had several visits there myself.
More than just a shopping mall, Square One offers a whole lifestyle experience. Its hundreds of shops provide everything from high-end fashion and electronics to Canadian brands along with international names. Restaurants, cafés, cinemas and entertainment spots make it a popular hangout for families as well as tourists living here too. On weekends especially , the mall buzzes with life reflecting Mississauga’s diverse culture.
According to Statistics Canada, the estimated population for Mississauga-a welcoming city-is roughly around 780 ,747 making it eighth largest municipality in terms of population across Canada. Meanwhile , the entire population estimate for Canada stands close at about 42 million.
The city’s multicultural nature might be its strongest feature; over half its residents hail from outside Canada representing more than 100 countries which makes Mississauga among top contenders when it comes cultural diversity worldwide. Walking through different neighborhoods you hear multiple languages spoken alongside cuisines found on virtually all continents. Nigerian eateries share space comfortably next door Indian, Pakistani Chinese , Italian, Lebanese Caribbean Middle Eastern Korean establishments.
If you’re Nigerian longing for some tastes back home, Mssissaugas got fantastic African grocery stores plus restaurants serving dishes like jollof rice, pounded yam , amala beans egusi soup, bitter-leaf soup suya, moi-moi pepper soup. Still , travel opens doors wider including food adventures where visitors can indulge authentic butter chicken, sushi shawarma, Korean barbecue or classic Canadian meals all just within few kilometers distance. Their pizza served at Earls Kitchen Bar happens to be amazing too.
Nature enthusiasts won’t feel disappointed either ; this cities waterfront along Lake Ontarioprovides scenic trails perfect walking, cylcing paths tranquil parks families gather summer warmth days. Port Credit lovingly nicknamed “Village on Lake ” brings charmful vibes featuring marina boutique shops cafes waterfront dining options. Catching sight sailboats gliding across lake during evenings while sunlight dances off water creates moments peacefulness seldom felt within bustling metropolitan settings.
