HOUSTON – The addition of José Soriano is a game changer for the Blue Jays’ starting rotation, both now and looking ahead. He joins Dylan Cease and Trey Yesavage, giving the team a strong trio through 2028.

This move comes at a steep price, as top shortstop prospect Arjun Nimmala is headed to the Angels along with minor league outfielder Eddie Micheletti and minor league right-hander Angel Rivero.

However, it’s a big upgrade for a Blue Jays rotation that has seen quite a bit of change in just 24 hours. Kevin Gausman has moved to Chicago for two prospects, while Jameson Taillon is arriving from the Cubs in another smaller trade.

While teams often talk about buying and selling at once, the Blue Jays are actually doing it-trading Gausman, who’s set to be a free agent soon, while also bringing in Soriano to strengthen their pitching staff for the long haul.

This deal is similar to the 2021 trade that brought Jose Berrios to Toronto in exchange for Austin Martin and Simeon Woods Richardson. The Blue Jays are trading away another former first-round pick to gain control over a right-handed starter.

The Blue Jays clearly aim to stay competitive into 2027 while addressing an important need within their organization. With Gausman, Shane Bieber, Max Scherzer, and Patrick Corbin all nearing free agency, adding starting pitching before opening day 2027 was essential.

In the meantime, this move keeps them competitive. Even though their playoff chances have dipped down to 5.0 percent, bringing in Soriano will keep things exciting as they’re currently 4.5 games behind in the wild card race.

A ground ball pitcher who averages 96.7 m. p. h. on his fastball, Soriano has posted a 3.29 ERA with 127 strikeouts across 123 innings this season. He’s earning $2.9 million during his first arbitration year and won’t hit free agency until after the 2028 season.

Nimmala was selected by the Blue Jays in the first round of the 2023 draft and has quickly become one of baseball’s top prospects. In his 62 games this year, he’s batting.265/.364/.453 with eight home runs while reaching double-A.

This marks the tenth straight season where the Blue Jays have made a trade on deadline day.
