The Ontario NDP claims that a Brampton politician misused tax dollars for ads in a newspaper owned by his father.
Ontario NDP Leader Marit Styles stated on Monday that she has requested the province’s Integrity Commissioner to look into Hardeep Grewal’s spending amid a hotel expense scandal, which revealed that two local politicians have collectively spent over $42,000 on Toronto hotels while living just 45 minutes away in Brampton.
This demand comes as part of a hotel spending scandal that has already resulted in the resignation of two Ontario Conservatives.
Grewal, who represents Brampton East, billed nearly $27,000 for hotel stays between 2023 and 2026. Meanwhile, Charmaine Williams, the MPP for Brampton Centre and Associate Minister of Women’s Social and Economic Opportunity, expensed more than $15,000 on Toronto hotels.
In addition to his role as an MPP, Grewal serves as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation and works alongside Brampton South MPP Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria.
However, it was also revealed that Grewal spent taxpayer money on ads promoting his events-like a summer BBQ-in a newspaper run by his own father. Styles has requested an investigation from the Integrity Commissioner. Attempts to reach Grewal for comment were unsuccessful by publication time.

“If Grewal’s family is benefiting from public funds, then people deserve answers,” Styles said in a release. “Doug Ford sets the tone for his caucus. His MPPs are using your money to fund their lifestyles while keeping his support. What else would you expect from a Premier who tried to buy himself a private jet with public funds?”
The s appeared in the Punjabi Post-a “leading independent newspaper that caters to the Asian Punjabi” with around 35,000 readers according to its website.
Toronto Willowdale MPP Stan Cho recently resigned from his position as minister of tourism, culture and gaming after incurring about $16,000 in hotel costs charged to taxpayers. He will still serve as an MPP for his riding. On Monday, reports emerged indicating Cho had also expensed close to $100,000 on food through his riding association-including a $6,970 meeting at a Blue Jays game.
Minister of Sport Neil Lumsden announced last week he would also be stepping down from cabinet and leaving the legislature on August 4 due to this spending scandal.
Both Grewal and Williams have not responded to multiple requests for comments; however, Grewal told he “should have consulted with the Integrity Commissioner and (has) since reached out to her office for advice.”
Ford sidestepped questions from reporters regarding why other implicated MPPs like Grewal remain in their positions.
“They’re all paying it back; it’s unacceptable,” Ford commented on Monday.
In May, protesters called out several Brampton MPPs including Grewal after they voted against Bill 113-a piece of legislation proposed by the NDP aimed at reducing some food items’ harmonized sales tax. In 2025, Grewal mentioned that he and his family faced racial slurs and threats while visiting a popular tourist spot in Ontario.
