A resident of Mississauga has been charged after someone allegedly attempted to fraudulently obtain a credit card through a business in southwestern Ontario last week, according to police.

Norfolk County Ontario Provincial Police reported that their investigation revealed an individual arrived at a Simcoe business, located southwest of Hamilton, last Wednesday afternoon just before 4 p. m. “to collect a credit card that had been fraudulently ordered.”

Officers responded to the business on Norfolk Street North following a report of ongoing fraudulent activity, as mentioned in a news release issued on Monday.

“The investigation determined that an individual attended the business to collect a credit card that had been fraudulently ordered,” police stated, adding that “prior to police being contacted, the victim had alerted the business to the suspected fraudulent activity.”

Authorities then located an individual at the scene and arrested them without any issues.

A 43-year-old resident from Mississauga is facing charges for:

Personation with intent – intent to obtain property (identity fraud). Use, deals, acts on forged document. Possession of a forged document with intent.

The accused is set to appear in court at the Ontario Court of Justice in Simcoe on Oct. 6.

OPP notes there are various forms of credit or debit card fraud that can target unsuspecting individuals.

“Credit or debit card fraud involves the compromise of any information from your credit card or debit card. The stolen information can then be used to purchase goods or services in your name,” police explained online regarding different types of fraud occurring in Ontario.

According to police, those who commit fraud can access information from cards through several methods:

Using the physical card after it has been lost or stolen. Using the card number and CVV (three-digit code on the back of the card) without having possession of the actual plastic card (also known as Card-Not-Present scams). INsauga’s Editorial Standards and Policies
