Great Lakes Helicopter (GLH) kicked off construction last week in Waterloo for a new hangar, marking the second phase of their expansion.

This new facility at the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) will enhance their operations, workforce training, and investment in advanced aviation and aerial tech, building on the company’s solid foundation in pilot training, maintenance, and specialized aviation services.

“This groundbreaking reflects the dedication of the entire Great Lakes Helicopter team and our shared vision for the future of Canadian aviation,” said Chad Mc Intosh, Owner and Managing Director of Great Lakes Helicopter. “This investment is about more than expanding our facilities; it’s about creating opportunities for the next generation of Canadian pilots and aviation professionals while fostering innovation across our industry.

“We are committed to strengthening tourism, supporting emerging aerospace technologies, and working alongside industry, educators, and government to ensure the Waterloo Region continues to grow as a centre for aviation, aerospace, and defence.”

Made up of Great Lakes Helicopter, Rotor Services Limited, GLH Drones, and heli SIX, this group has transformed over two decades from a pilot training school into a diverse aviation services organization that supports training, maintenance, commercial operations, and emerging aerial technologies. Under new ownership, they’re uniting local aviation enthusiasts and entrepreneurs with experience across various industries.

“Great Lakes Helicopter represents the kind of local investment and innovation that helps strengthen our economy,” said Regional Chair Karen Redman. “Their continued growth supports high-quality jobs and workforce development while helping position our region as a leader in emerging technologies and next-generation transportation solutions.”

Pursuing their long-term vision, GLH aims to become the top regional platform for aviation and aerial technology. The organization focuses on enhancing Ontario’s role in pilot training and workforce development while also looking to expand commercial aviation services, advance drone technology applications, and support innovations in remote access, emergency response, and logistics.

By blending technical know-how with operational experience alongside emerging technology, Great Lakes Helicopter is contributing to a stronger regional aviation ecosystem while positioning the area as a hub for forward-thinking aviation advancements.

Great Lakes Helicopter (GLH) is a Canadian aviation firm dedicated to professional pilot training as well as specialized commercial helicopter operations. Their efforts benefit students along with industries throughout Ontario and beyond. They’ve built a reputation based on safety along with operational excellence from real-world experience.

The Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) is one of Canada’s fastest-growing airports offering full-service facilities that accommodate commercial flights as well as corporate and general aviation needs.
