The University of Waterloo is excited to grant nine honorary doctorates during the Spring 2026 Convocation, which is the highest honor given by the University.
Honorary doctorates celebrate individuals whose exceptional achievements and contributions have significantly influenced the University, their communities, their fields, and the world. The recipients are honored for excellence in various areas including research, scholarship, the arts, professional achievement, and community service.
This year’s honorary doctorate recipients have made outstanding contributions in mathematics, physics, archaeology, business, engineering, and science.
“This year’s honorary doctorate recipients exemplify the impact that comes from curiosity, collaboration and excellence,” says Dr. Vivek Goel, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Waterloo. “We are proud to recognize their achievements and celebrate the meaningful contributions they have made to society.”

Gilles Brassard
Doctor of Mathematics, honoris causa
Gilles Brassard is known as a pioneer in quantum information science. He has been a Professor at Université de Montréal since 1979 and was Canada Research Chair in Quantum Information Science. An Officer of the Order of Canada and an honoree of the Ordre national du Québec, Brassard has earned many accolades including the Wolf Prize in Physics, Micius Quantum Prize, BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Basic Sciences, Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics and most recently received the A. M. Turing Award. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society and an International Member of the U. S. National Academy of Sciences.

Peter E. Caines
Doctor of Mathematics, honoris causa
Dr. Peter E. Caines is a globally recognized authority in systems and control theory whose research has enhanced our understanding of complex dynamic systems with applications across engineering disciplines as well as economics and natural sciences. As a Distinguished James Mc Gill Professor and Macdonald Chair within Mc Gill University’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, he is famed for his foundational work on stochastic systems, adaptive control methods along with mean field game theory concepts that have shaped generations of researchers around the globe. Caines has garnered numerous distinctions including receiving the IEEE Control Systems Society Bode Lecture Prize along with being elected to join Canada’s Royal Society.
Ronald F. Williamson
Doctor of Letters, honoris causa
Dr. Ronald F. Williamson stands out as an expert in Ontario archaeology while also being known as founder of Archaeological Services Inc., which is one among Canada’s largest cultural resource management companies. Throughout his impressive 40-year career span , Williamson directed over one thousand archaeological assessments throughout Ontario aiming to protect important Indigenous sites alongside Euro-Canadian locations too. A prolific author , he penned or co-penned 17 books , along with more than 70 articles plus book chapters , coupled together thousands worth technical reports. In conjunction with popular media efforts alongside documentaries , he has successfully brought forth Ontario’s rich archaeological history towards wider audiences. His lasting influence includes strong collaborations forged alongside Indigenous communities while mentoring many students over time – additionally advocating tirelessly for improved heritage policies across regions.
Gerard Meijer

Dr. Gerard Meijer ranks among top molecular physicists globally recognized due to his pioneering advancements that revolutionized experimental studies regarding molecules extensively impacting scientific research directions today onwards.
