The Ontario government has shared plans to construct a courthouse in Oakville that will benefit the entire Halton Region.

Oakville Mayor Rob Burton announced this today, just days after he highlighted issues related to safety, overcrowding, and delays at the current outdated facilities in Milton and Burlington.

“It’s impressive how quickly Attorney General Doug Downey and Premier Doug Ford have responded to Halton Region’s unanimous resolution I and Milton Mayor Gord Krantz put forward on Wednesday,” Burton said about the news that was likely already being considered before it was brought up at the Halton Regional council meeting.

In 2020, the Ford government canceled plans for a new courthouse in Oakville, opting instead to pursue upgrades at the Milton and Burlington facilities.

Prior to its cancellation, there were plans for a courthouse near Oakville Trafalgar Hospital that would cost $400 million.

The timeline for this new project hasn’t been disclosed, and it’s unclear where they intend to build now. However, an architectural firm has already been selected by Queen’s Park to design the building.

Local politicians in Halton have frequently raised concerns about conditions at existing courthouses, particularly in Milton. The aging infrastructure has led to safety worries, facility closures, and court case cancellations. Moreover, a shortage of courtrooms has caused delays in hearing cases.
