This year marked the return of SLC’s Esthetician Program to the Skills Trades Competition after being absent for five years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The last time they participated was in 2019 when esthetician student Katie Salamone earned gold, according to the college. Now a faculty member in the Esthetician Program, Salamone supported Amalfi as part of her training team.
According to a release from the college on Tuesday, Jun. 9, 2026, Amalfi first competed at the provincial Skills Ontario Competition in Toronto on May 4 and 5, 2026. She earned a gold medal there and secured her spot on Team Ontario. She then moved on to compete at the Skills Canada National Competition in Toronto on May 28 and 29, 2026, as part of a delegation of 131 competitors representing Ontario against top esthetician students nationwide.
“Emma delivered an outstanding performance, and her success is a testament to her dedication, perseverance, professionalism, and countless hours of preparation,” said Dr. Aba Mortley, SLC’s Esthetician Program Coordinator.
“Her achievement reflects not only her individual commitment to excellence but also the strength of the St. Lawrence College Esthetician Program and the support network behind her.”
In esthetics events, Amalfi showcased her abilities with facials, manicures, makeup application, and body treatments. Competitors were judged based on sanitation practices, time management skills, client comfort and care quality as well as effective communication with clients.
“My experience at the skills competition was more than I could have hoped for,” Amalfi said.
“It was well worth all those long hours of hard training. Thanks to my trainers at SLC who dedicated themselves to helping me shine where my efforts would be recognized-it made this experience truly rewarding.”
SLC mentioned that many faculty members and staff supported Amalfi throughout this journey including trainers Paisley Mattes, Diana Boboti-Senis, Elisabeth Gingras, Katie Salamone; Geoff Phof providing laboratory support; Aidan Wornes as Associate Dean; along with ongoing program support.
“Emma’s gold medal is a wonderful example of our students’ caliber,” said Glenn Vollebregt, SLC President and CEO.
“At St. Lawrence College we focus on student success by delivering high-quality practical programs-and we couldn’t be prouder of Emma along with everyone who helped her achieve this milestone.”
