Young Boy Linked to Ontario Car Theft

Dalubuhle Sibanda, a resident of West Windsor, says she was shocked when she saw the home surveillance footage showing what looked like a young boy involved in stealing her family’s car.

“This makes me very sad. It also makes me feel very angry, because I don’t want that for any child,” said Sibanda after reviewing the video following the theft of her vehicle.

“To get involved, at such a young and tender age, in serious crime like this.. It’s shocking and it’s very frightening.”

The incident took place on the evening of September 14. Sibanda recalls that it started with the boy – whom she thinks is around 10 years old – coming over to play with her three children in their front yard.

Surveillance footage captures child entering the home

The boy hung out with the kids for several minutes, playing basketball and sitting on their porch.

“I don’t know him,” Sibanda said.

Then, according to the surveillance camera, the boy spent some time near the front door. At an opportune moment, he slipped inside their house. CBC has seen this footage from Sibanda’s security system.

Sibanda believes that’s when he took the car keys that were hanging near the door. Moments later, another camera at the back of their home recorded him running away.

Sibanda mentioned that she and her husband didn’t notice the keys were gone for hours; initially thinking they might have misplaced them.

However, later that night, a neighbor’s camera captured a group of young males watching Sibanda’s house.

Windsor police are looking into it

“I believe that [the boy] took our car keys and gave them to someone else, and that person is the one who stole our car,” said Sibanda.

She reported everything to local police and shared her video evidence. The Windsor Police Service confirmed to CBC Windsor they are investigating but did not provide details regarding what Sibanda disclosed to them.

Sibanda added that since this happened, she’s spoken with neighbors who’ve experienced similar car thefts – sharing stories about how it occurred.

“Our car is the third car that was taken in two weeks,” Sibanda noted.

Yetunde Oloye, another west end resident, stated her vehicle was stolen earlier this month but has since been recovered. She also suspects children were behind it – specifically two boys she found inside her doorway on September 1st.

She estimates they were around 12 or 13 years old.

“This is very, very bad behaviour. It’s not right. The government needs to find something to do about it,” Oloye expressed.

Oloye mentioned knowing one of those boys lives nearby and questioned why no action has been taken against him yet.

“The police said, ‘He’s a minor.’ Minor for what? That’s a criminal to me,” she argued.

“Maybe they should jail their parents. They are not training their children very well. So the parents should be in jail by now.”

At a recent meeting of Windsor’s Police Services board, Deputy Chief Kenneth Cribley pointed out an increase in youth crime within the city – both in frequency and severity of crimes committed.

This month alone, Windsor police arrested two boys aged 12 and 13 connected to multiple vehicle thefts and attempted thefts during July and August months ahead..

The two boys face a total of 48 charges......
