The first Project Bookmark Canada (PBC) plaque in Southwestern Ontario has been revealed in Thamesville.
On Tuesday, the Chatham-Kent Public Library (CKPL) held an event to honor the plaque that pays tribute to local writer Robertson Davies.
Davies, who was born in Thamesville, is regarded as one of Canada’s finest essayists and novelists. The plaque features a quote from his book “Fifth Business”, which takes place in Thamesville.
“To have such a well-known local author from Thamesville, where we have a library branch and to have this unveiling at our Thamesville branch is just very exciting for us,” said Heidi Wyma, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Librarian of CKPS. “We are just so happy and tickled to be part of this unveiling and that they’ve chosen us as the first plaque.”

This has been months in the making, with Executive Member of PBC Carolyn Beacroft reaching out with the idea. Beacroft explained it was an easy sell, with municipal officials and local vendors stepping up to help raise funds for the plaque.
“You could just walk down the street and just talk to anybody, and they were all enthusiastic about it,” Beacroft continued.
The plaque is placed just outside the Thamesville CKPL branch and is one of two plaques being installed in Chatham-Kent (CK). The second plaque will be located at the Chatham branch and will honor author Lori Lansen.
