Whitby is among Canada’s fastest-growing towns, with a current population of around 140,000 (Statistics Canada 2024), which is projected to hit 190,000 by 2031.
This expansive 160,000-square-foot facility located on Baldwin Street South near Highway 407 was designed by Perkins& Will Architecture and constructed by Ledcor. Its nature-inspired look aims to resemble pieces of ice breaking through dark rock during spring thaw.
The aquatics center at this sports complex is the largest in Durham Region featuring a main pool that is 25 meters long with ten lanes alongside a separate leisure pool. A double gymnasium includes an indoor walking track. Versatile spaces are available for community meetings and programs.

Outdoor features include the first artificial turf sports field in town, along with lit pickleball courts, tennis courts, basketball courts, a skatepark, a pump track, and a playground. It was named Fieldgate Sports Complex in December 2025 after council approved a $1.5 million naming rights deal with Fieldgate Homes for ten years.
This project was identified as essential through Whitby’s Community Strategic Plan and long-term recreation planning efforts.
John Romano, Commissioner of Community Services says feedback from residents played an important role in shaping the design since this was one of the largest public engagement initiatives ever undertaken by the town. Input came from surveys, public meetings, stakeholder sessions and staff engagement with over 7,000 people taking part during planning.

The community consistently expressed that outdoor recreational space was vital; thus the town acquired another 13 acres adjacent to create Roybrook Park which supports additional outdoor features like the skatepark and pump track along with pickleball and tennis courts.
“The Fieldgate Sports Complex is more than just a recreation facility – it’s truly reflective of our community’s vision for what’s ahead,” states Mayor Elizabeth Roy. “Bringing this facility to life fulfills one of the 62 action items outlined in Whitby’s Community Strategic Plan-it’s thrilling to see it realized.”
This new venue stands out as Canada’s first zero carbon building that also holds LEED Gold certification featuring facilities like twin-pad arenas alongside gyms and an aquatic center according to town officials.
Sustainable elements include geothermal district energy systems utilizing ground-source energy for heating/cooling along with rooftop solar panels that generate approximately fifteen percent of power needed for operation.
No fossil fuels will be used for daily heating needs either. Other efficiency strategies involve low-emission cooling options using specialized refrigerants designed for reduced Global Warming Potential at arenas plus mechanical systems that recapture excess heat (for instance directing thermal energy from arenas) into pool heating or under-seat spectator viewing areas.
The site incorporates various accessibility features such as a suspended ramp within its main lobby measuring120 square feet wheelchair ramps providing access into swimming pools wider automated doorways barrier-free signage plus slip-resistant flooring throughout premises including gender-neutral universal restrooms/change rooms ensuring full accessibility even at children’s playground outdoors.
The surrounding area will have rewilded landscape designs emphasizing native plants fostering biodiversity whilst managing natural stormwater effectively too. p >
