A recent report from pest control company Orkin reveals that Oshawa is facing a significant bed bug issue.
Their 2019 ranking of Canada’s top ‘bed bug cities’ places Oshawa at number eight, making it one of six cities in Ontario to reach the top 10.
Toronto leads the list, followed by other major cities like Winnipeg, Vancouver, and Ottawa.
Whitby also appears on the list, landing at number 20.
Kevin Shanahan, Branch Manager for Orkin Durham Region, mentions that bed bugs tend to travel with people, which is why they are commonly found in large cities and urban settings.
He notes that there are certain signs renters should watch for that may indicate potential bed bug problems.
“If there’s a lot of turnover in the building, if it’s a high-density location… The higher the volume of people, the bigger the potential for bed bug problems,” he said. “They’re hitchhikers, so a lot of multi-dwelling places have more problems (the individual homes).”
Shanahan points out that hotels and motels are frequent sources of bed bugs and warns that without caution, you could bring them home with you.
He suggests inspecting your hotel room before unpacking as a best practice.
“You can look around the seams of the bed and you might see blood stains,” said Shanahan. “There could be fecal matter around the bed, which are pepper-like droppings. You could even possibly see a live bed bug, which is about the size of an appleseed.”
Shanahan finds that one common hiding spot for bed bugs is behind or near the headboard of beds.
If you’re concerned about bringing back any unwanted guests from your travels, Shanahan recommends placing all your clothes and towels in the dryer at “a high, hot temperature” right away.
You might also consider storing your empty luggage in a garage or shed for a few days after returning home.
Another typical source of bed bugs is second-hand furniture.
He mentions many infestations begin with items bought from yard sales or picked up from curbside trash (which Shanahan strongly advises against).
