Halton Region votes in Burlington, Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills

Burlington is experiencing a particularly exciting municipal election this year. Two sitting city councillors are taking on the mayor for her position, while a former federal and provincial politician and regional chair has made an unexpected return to local politics.

There are five candidates vying for the mayor’s spot, but the most talked-about race is between incumbent Marianne Meed Ward and councillors Lisa Kearns and Rory Nisan.

Meed Ward has been serving as mayor since 2018. Kearns has represented Ward 2 and Nisan has been in charge of Ward 3 since that same year. Their choice to step away from their council roles to challenge Meed Ward ensures a shift in Burlington’s political leadership post-election.

Gary Carr, currently the chair of Halton Region, is also making waves by running for city and regional councillor in Burlington’s Ward 2 instead of pursuing another term as regional chair. He comes with over thirty years of experience in elected office at various levels including his tenure as Halton’s regional chair starting from 2006.

Carr’s candidacy is particularly noteworthy because voters in Burlington won’t be selecting a regional chair this time around. Changes to regional governance mean that the chair position will not be included on the ballot.

Oakville’s municipal election looks like it could lead to significant changes at Town Hall this year. Six out of fourteen ward council seats are set to feature new faces along with a five-way race for mayor involving current council members.

Incumbent Mayor Rob Burton is up against sitting councillors Sean O’Meara, Jeff Knoll, Arvind Choudhary, and Julia Hanna in his bid for re-election.

This competition stands out because both O’Meara and Knoll will vacate their council positions to run for the town’s highest office.

Hanna will face Burton again after coming very close to defeating him last time. In the previous election held in 2022, Burton secured just under twenty thousand votes compared to Hanna’s nearly nineteen thousand – only an eight hundred eighty-six vote difference.

This marks Hanna’s third attempt against Burton since she also challenged him in the election of twenty eighteen.

Burton aims to extend his tenure as Oakville’s mayor which began back in two thousand six.

AT THE CENTRE OF IT ALL IS MAYOR GORD KRANTZ WHO IS SEEKING WHAT WOULD BE A TWENTY-SECOND CONSECUTIVE TERM IN LOCAL OFFICE AND HIS FIFTEENTH AS MAYOR. KRANTZ TURNED EIGHTY-NINE THIS YEAR AND WAS FIRST ELECTED AS A MILTON TOWN COUNCILLOR BACK IN NINETEEN SIXTY-FIVE WHILE SERVING AS MAYOR CONTINUOUSLY SINCE NINETEEN EIGHTY. HE'S WIDELY CONSIDERED CANADA'S LONGEST-SERVING MAYOR AND BY SOME ACCOUNTS THE LONGEST-SERVING MUNICIPAL POLITICIAN IN NORTH AMERICA AFTER SURPASSING THE LATE HAZEL MCCALLION FOR THAT DISTINCTION A DECADE AGO. HOWEVER KRANTZ’S HOLD ON THE OFFICE IS NO LONGER AS SECURE AS IT USED TO BE. BACK IN TWENTY-EIGHTEEN HE WON WITH MORE THAN EIGHTY PERCENT OF THE VOTE BUT THAT MARGIN SHRUNK SIGNIFICANTLY IN TWENTY-TWO WHEN HE OUTLASTED REGIONAL COUNCILLOR ZEE HAMID BY LESS THAN ONE THOUSAND VOTES TAKING JUST UNDER FIFTY PERCENT COMPARED TO HAMID'S FORTY-FIVE POINT TWO PERCENT. HAMID HAS SINCE MOVED ONTO PROVINCIAL POLITICS AS MILTON’S MPP BUT THE CLOSE RESULT HAS ENCOURAGED A NEW ROUND OF CHALLENGERS. THE MOST PROMINENT CHALLENGER IS SAMEERA ALI WHO CURRENTLY SERVES AS REGIONAL COUNCILLOR FOR WARD FOUR AND ANNOUNCED HER BID FOR MAYOR LAST DECEMBER FRAMING HER CAMPAIGN AROUND WHAT SHE CALLS “STEADY PRACTICAL” LEADERSHIP WHILE MILTON COPES WITH RAPID POPULATION GROWTH. FIRST ELECTED TO COUNCIL IN TWENTY-EIGHTEEN ALI HAS ALSO SERVED ON THE HALTON POLICE BOARD AND PREVIOUSLY RAN PROVINCIALLY IN TWENTY-TWO IF ELECTED SHE WOULD BE MILTON’S FIRST FEMALE MAYOR. OTHER CANDIDATES INCLUDE GEORGE MINAKAKIS CURRENTLY REPRESENTING WARD ONE AFTER WINNING A BY-ELECTION LAST YEAR ALONG WITH MALIHAA K AHMED NADEEM AKBAR ABDULKAREEM AKBIK CHEZ AMUN ZAINAB AZIM ARJUN JOSHI AND ASIF KHAN.
