OTTAWA/WASHINGTON – The United States and Canada are negotiating a deal to lower U. S. tariffs on Canadian steel and automobiles, according to two U. S. sources and four from Canada, as both governments seek to mend ties that worsened after trade discussions stalled in August.
The negotiations focus on tariffs set under Section 232 of U. S. trade law, which includes tariffs as high as 50% on Canadian steel and 25% on autos, with negotiators exploring ways to alleviate these duties.
Only 32% of Americans support President Donald Trump, and his Republican Party risks losing control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections next week. Tariffs on imports from Canada have become a political challenge for Trump, with Republican candidates in border states pushing for an end to the trade conflict with Canada.
