Almost every month for nearly a year, Kathleen Toman has made the journey from her home in Balsam Lake, Ont., to Mont-Tremblant, Que. This weekend, she’ll once again travel the 500-kilometre distance to meet her ex-husband, Chris Toman.
Together, they will keep looking for anyone or anything that might help them find their son, Liam.
“Anything that might have happened could be a small clue,” Kathleen said in an interview. A selfie, an awkward moment, a bit of small talk – no detail is too insignificant.
“Every time I go back, I learn a little more information about something. Every single time.”
And yet so far, nothing explains how her son, Liam Gabriel Toman, disappeared from the ski resort during the early hours of February 2, 2025.
On Friday evening, January 31, 2025, Liam was 22 years old when he and two friends, Kyle Warnock and Colin Lemmings, set off for what they had been looking forward to – a ski weekend. As they approached Tremblant after their five-hour drive from Whitby, Ont., their excitement grew.

“It just opens up with the hill and all the cabins on the side of it; then the mountain rises up,” Lemmings told Radio-Canada’s Enquête. “It’s quite an eye-opener since we don’t see something like that very often.”
They checked into their hotel at Tour des Voyageurs II and began to unwind for their holiday.

The Saturday went according to plan – spending time on the slopes followed by pizza and drinks at a bar named Lucille’s. By then it had turned bitterly cold at around -25 C. Just after 11 p. m., Lemmings decided to head back to their room while his friends stayed out with clubgoers at Le P’tit Caribou.
“We had a couple more drinks and then kind of split up inside,” Warnock shared with Enquête. Shortly after 2 a. m., as the club started clearing out, Warnock sent Liam a text message. When he didn’t receive any response back he called it a night.

“The helicopter flew so low it almost looked like it was hovering over my living room,” Mont-Tremblant resident Sylvie Blais recounted to Enquête. Like many others nearby she felt compelled to assist once she learned about Liam’s disappearance.
A local business owner Yves Delvallet turned his daily dog walks into an organized effort searching tirelessly for Liam throughout several months.
Kathleen was moved by all of this support from her community.
“It gives you – I know it’s cliche – but.. faith in humanity,” she expressed.
A resort staff member found Liam’s wallet near one of parking lots in March which prompted SQ officials to resume searches in earnest again.
No new findings emerged however.
Once spring arrived police re-explored areas where searches previously took place without finding anything new either.
Kathleen found herself feeling stuck due lack answers about her son’s fate.
“When you’re faced with this situation you don’t know what actions are necessary,” she explained.
“You’re not investigators nor law enforcement officers; you rely fully upon them trusting they’ll do everything possible meanwhile feeling desperate yourself wanting some form resolution.”You must keep pushing forward seeking any means uncovering solutions because it’s such mystery; none pieces fit together logically – there’s no peace resting until clarity emerges!”.>()

‘20 calls later’
Liam didn’t come back to their room that night. His friends thought he might have crashed elsewhere but still felt uneasy and tried reaching him again when they hit the slopes Sunday morning. “I called once every hour,” said Warnock. “After a few hours I started calling him twice an hour then three times an hour until finally I ended up making around twenty calls; that’s when we thought: ‘OK maybe … something’s not right.’” By day’s end they alerted authorities as well as Liam’s family. Liam’s father Chris recalls getting that call just before six o’clock in the evening. “I said ‘We need to contact police immediately; we need to reach out to the resort because we don’t know where he is?’” he told Enquête. A storm rolled in as Chris along with his wife Lara Toman and Kathleen drove through snow towards Tremblant that night. “I couldn’t believe how fast it was coming down yet how long it felt,” Lara shared with Enquête.‘You cannot rest’
The Quebec provincial police known as Sûreté du Québec (SQ) searched for Liam over twelve days – using foot patrols and horseback rides alongside ATVs and snowmobiles while also utilizing dogs and helicopters overhead.Kathleen was moved by all of this support from her community.
