Trying to reach voters can be tough. For Democrats aiming to gain support in Roberts County, Texas, it often feels like running headfirst into a wall.

This rural area in the Texas Panhandle has been labeled as America’s most pro-Trump county, with over 94 percent of its voters supporting Donald Trump in each of the last three presidential elections.

In comparison, the number of Kamala Harris supporters in the county could easily fit on a school bus. This year’s Democratic primary voters would barely fill an Uber.

“We just haven’t been able to get any traction there,” Sean Birkenfeld, president of Panhandle Democrats, a regional political action committee, told The Independent.

In conversations, Democrats shared how challenging it is to make progress in Roberts County where Fox News is commonly watched in local businesses, Trump signs are everywhere, and the party associated with Franklin Roosevelt has long been dormant. Some believe there may actually be more Democrats than voting results indicate but they keep their views “closeted,” hesitant to reveal their politics due to fear of backlash.

Understanding How Roberts County Became Pro-Trump

Roberts County sits about 80 miles northwest of Amarillo and has roughly 870 residents. Its economy focuses mainly on agribusiness and oil production and it’s one out of only three counties in Texas that still bans alcohol sales. The only city here is Miami-pronounced “My-am-uh.”

The county earned its title as Trump’s most devoted supporter back in 2016 when he won an impressive 94.58 percent-this was more Republican support than any other county during that election. That backing has remained steady: Trump secured 96.18 percent during his re-election bid in 2020 and achieved about 95.63 percent again this past election cycle.

For many locals, Trump symbolized hope that people like them wouldn’t be ignored. “I feel like Trump has my back; I hope he doesn’t prove me wrong,” local resident John Faith told a news outlet back then.

Another resident named Steve Porter highlighted strength and job creation while discussing his thoughts with ABC News back in 2018: “I realized that we needed a president who believed America was great. Greater than all other countries,” he mentioned.

Aiming for Progress

Democrats looking to make their mark have faced significant challenges within this community. This year’s Democratic primary saw participation from just three individuals compared to an impressive turnout for Republicans which attracted around306 voters.

Mark Nair-the Democratic candidate for Texas’13th congressional district encompassing Roberts County-mentioned he’s visited several times but getting people together remains tough.

“Seriously; it’s like two people that would come,” he noted while speaking with The Independent.

Birkenfeld attempted organizing an event locally but couldn’t even get enough interest for attendance tracking; plans fell through before they could materialize into anything substantial: “I haven’t actually been able to get any engagement,” he said regarding his efforts as an organizer.

The absence currently lacks dedicated Democratic leadership; no county chair exists right now which makes volunteer recruitment or networking much harder according Birkenfeld’s observation regarding local dynamics.

Nair adds it isn’t about unwelcoming attitudes from residents though-they’re genuinely friendly folks who care deeply about their families/community:“They really do,” Nair expressed.”But when it turns towards politics.. it’s almost like you’re trying crack this tough nut.” He continued further explaining how despite persistent arguments countering current beliefs surrounding Trump’s effectiveness-it becomes increasingly difficult due people’s existing convictions remaining steadfast.nn<src="%5B(getty-"#t-_fo<trans_Mark" Nair seen speaking with vo–"://$k) === Tiff!" NK_e—tain". alt="" M=$45""`"</"'/'–<=d*"+ "_(/~~"\"+" = = _19+ ="number. t._skip/counter" For now,, some efforts aimed at building up Democratic presence involve less grand ambitions than swaying anyone's opinion directly.

The Roberts County Facebook group operated by Bonny Krahn-a woman living hundreds o f miles away-was created specifically provide starting points across different areas throughout Te xas where organizations are either lacking or struggling until local leaders emerge. Posts made within her group focus mostly essentials related upcoming elections such As dates/times/places along information concerning ballots being used. Currently membership stands at nineteen members strong!

The Price Paid For Being Different

Or Gani Zers Suspect returns don’t paint entire picture depicting life among democrats Here i n rural PANHANDLE!!! Some supporters prefer Keeping Political Views private based On Past experiences shared birkenfeld note s. “There ’s Not Really Better Termonology But They’re Closeted” stated BIRKENFELD!! A story From Several years ago showcases what openly diverging opinions could cost Someone Living In miami-the COUNTy Seat.. Susan Bowers-the curator Of A Local Museum-remembered Changing allegiances after training Social Work And attending school further away described losses incurred Due To Her view against trump. “I feel Like The Black Sheep Of miami” she commented expressing dismay At lost friendships tied Back Other People’S Passionate Beliefs!!<img src=" %%URL_3 %% "loading=" lazy" alt="A 'vote here' sign seen outside Miami Community City on Election Day Novem Ber5th."( AFP Via GETTY IMAGES) A 'Vote Here' sign outside community voting spot during elections.. This Year Dem Primary Saw Only Three Participants Vs Over THREE HUNDRED FOR GOP %27s Results clearly depict imbalanceThe worry surrounding revealing personal political affiliations resonates With Birkenfeld too-as reports circulate throughout region citing defaced yard signs & hostile reactions towards democratic clothing.. Bir Ken Feld himself experienced hostility firsthand At An Art Event where someone spotted him wearing DEMOCRATIC Candidate shirt & approached saying : “Oh so you’re One Of THOSE libtards”, He recalled reacting surprised By Encounter. Yet Political Isolation Exists Across Board; trump advocates In liberal areas Also Feel marginalized Not Sharing Their Views Freely!!

A Glimmer Of Change?

Despite difficulties convincing Folks To Show Up , NAIR believes Some Residents Are starting question What Loyalty To TRUMP Has Produced… Concerns expressed by locals tend Center largely around farming issues water rights especially since area Sits atop largest freshwater aquifer available Within North AMERICA however He Recognizes Limits On Such Conversations too! “Now I know It’S NOT everyone speaking Because Most Won’t Attend Events” remarked NAIR describing situation accurately. His observation reveals feeling Betrayed Especially After Supporting Trump Repeatedly. Krahn noticed Improvement Building Local Democrat Organizations estimating When She Began Working About sixty-four Counties Lacked Chairs While Now Number Stands closer Forty-Six Total… “So We’re Gradually Moving Forward!” she exclaims enthusiastically!!!<img src="%url4%"loading=lazy! alt=A glance at TEXAS POLITICAL Scene shows P. axton Vs James Talarico fighting Senate seat contest even within strongly colored red states where traditional outcomes favor republicans …Recent polls hint competitiveness highlighting possibility change ahead.!????

In SUMMARY ; Efforts being made Organizing Communities Must Extend Beyond ONE NIGHT events Focused Solely ON elections instead create Long term Structures facilitating connections Between Individuals seeking common ground Without deeming Them Politically Committed Or Labelled Insignificantly.. With results showing minimal participation Like THIS YEAR’S PRIMARY DRAWING ONLY THREE VOTERS – Even small victories Could signify Something significant moving forward!
