This group included Damiano Palmegiani, Dahian Santos, Bo Bonds, Jacob Wetzel, and Nicolas Deschamps. They were all part of the team but hadn’t locked in a regular spot. The timing comes about 10 days before Opening Day and indicates how the team is adjusting its roster. The emphasis now is on players who can contribute as the season draws near.Toronto's Roster Moves Reflect Competitive DepthThese releases were from minor league contracts and not trades. The decision was primarily about creating space in a more competitive system across various levels. Spring Training served as a final chance for evaluation. The released players couldn't advance due to injuries or slow development. There were no off-field issues that influenced this decision; it was simply a matter of making tough calls in a crowded field.Injury Challenges Affected Player ProgressAll five players faced difficulties with staying healthy. Ongoing injuries hindered their growth and limited opportunities for consistent play. Palmegiani, once considered a power threat, spent considerable time on development lists and the injured list over recent seasons. Bonds and Santos showed flashes of effectiveness but had their innings cut short by injuries. At ages ranging from 23 to 26, they reached a point where improvement was necessary to remain relevant in the system.Toronto Blue Jays Shortstop Bo Bichette (Image via Getty)Toronto’s strategy signals a shift toward valuing both availability and performance.Overview of Released PlayersPlayer Position Age (as of March 2026)Born Drafts/Signed2025 Mi LB Stats (Key)Career Mi LB OPS/ERAInjury Notes Damiano Palmegiani 3B/1B 26 Caracas, VEN 2021 Rd 14.159 AVG, 1 HR, 18 RBI (176 AB).766 OPS Multiple dev list, IL 2024-25 Dahian Santos RHP ~23 N/A International FA 6.00 ERA (27 IP, AA) N/A Forearm/elbow, 60-day IL multiple years Bo Bonds RHP 25 N/A 2022 Rd 13 3.34 ERA, 1.03 WHIP (35 IP, A+) N/A IL retro to Jun 2025; previous setbacks; 78.1 IP in four years Jacob Wetzel OF 25 (Mar 26 bday) Walkersville, MD Rule 5 AAA from CHC.000 AVG (2 AB, ST) N/A Frequent 7-day IL; dev list Nicolas Deschamps C ~24 Quebec, CAN N/A Limited minors N/A Organizational release focus The stats show limited output mainly due to missed playing time. Palmegiani’s performance declined while Bonds had decent numbers during brief appearances without accumulating enough innings.Impact on the Team and Future ProspectsThe Toronto Blue Jays' decision opens spots within their system for other emerging prospects-particularly those advancing through Double-A-and decreases reliance on players who haven’t been consistently available. For these athletes, this could lead to new chances elsewhere. Bonds and Santos might get attention based on their stats while Palmegiani’s past power potential may still catch someone’s eye. Independent leagues or international opportunities are also possibilities. The Decision-Making ProcessThe Toronto Blue Jays gain clarity in their depth chart by moving forward with healthier options instead of continuing with players who haven't shown progress yet. This reflects an assertive approach as they gear up for the season. There’s still hope that one of these released athletes could find success elsewhere moving forward. For them now lies the challenge of rebuilding value despite lacking major league experience while dealing with prior injury concerns.
