A two-year-old boy has suffered serious injuries after being attacked by a coyote at a park in Whitby, Ontario. This incident marks the second such attack on a young child in the area within just two weeks.

According to Durham Regional Police, officers were called to Vanier Park, located near Brock Street North and Rossland Road East, around 8:30 PM on Sunday following an ambulance alert.

The police report states that the child was playing in the playground when a coyote suddenly approached and attacked him.

“The child sustained bite injuries to his face before his guardian and several bystanders were able to intervene and scare the coyote away,” said Durham Regional Police in a news release.

The boy received serious injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

An hour later, officers responded to another incident involving a different distressed coyote near Harrier and Annes streets. Fortunately, no one was injured during that occurrence.

This latest attack comes shortly after another coyote-related incident on June 22, where a young boy was bitten near Coronation and Rossland roads, which is about 2.5 kilometers from Sunday’s attack.

The police indicated they are collaborating with the Town of Whitby, Durham Regional Health Department, and Whitby Animal Services to look into these incidents and monitor coyote activity.

They advised residents to refrain from feeding coyotes, keep an eye on children and pets, and utilize hazing techniques if they encounter these animals.
