A councillor from Waterloo is urging the provincial government to motivate people to recycle their bottles more frequently.
During a council meeting on Monday, Councillor Julie Wright introduced a motion asking the province to create a non-alcoholic bottle deposit-return program.
Wright pointed out that Ontario is among the few provinces without a deposit-return system for non-alcoholic bottles and has the lowest beverage container recovery rate in Canada.
“Canadian provinces and territories that have a deposit-return program are able to recycle over three-quarters of their bottles, and even higher than that,” said Wright.
She hopes this initiative would inspire people to recycle all types of bottles since empty alcoholic beverage containers are returned to Ontario Beer Stores around 80 percent of the time.
“Recycling rates are in a weird, fluctuating position at the moment, and we really need leadership in this moment in order to get ahead of this issue,” said Wright at Monday’s meeting.
The motion claimed that the Ontario government suggested expanding the program to include non-alcoholic containers in 2023.
The council passed the motion unanimously, and messages will be sent to Premier Ford’s office as well as local MPPs’ offices.
