Building more homes and making them affordable is a key focus for the Council.
City Council has passed a motion to extend the City’s development charges incentive program until December 31, 2027. This extension allows developers an extra year to benefit from the incentives, helping them continue to create much-needed housing for families in Mississauga.
The program, which began in January 2025 and was improved in February 2026, provides these reductions in development charges for residential properties:
50 percent for all types of residential units 100 percent for purpose-built apartment rental units Applies to 1-bedroom plus den, 2-bedroom or 3-bedroom units 25-year rental tenure agreement required
Initially, when the program started, there was a deadline of November 13, 2026, to obtain building permits. Now, developers can pull a building permit until December 31, 2027, to qualify for the incentives. These benefits aim to promote new housing construction while enhancing overall affordability.
This motion reinforces the City’s ongoing initiatives aimed at increasing home availability and affordability in Mississauga. After releasing the Mayor’s Housing Task Force report in January 2025, Mississauga became one of Ontario’s first municipalities to reduce or eliminate development charges on residential housing.
