As the Region of Waterloo deals with issues related to water capacity, a local MPP is urging Queen’s Park to implement protections for our groundwater.

MPP for Kitchener Centre and Ontario Green Party Deputy Leader Aislinn Clancy is advocating for the provincial government to provide permanent protection for the Waterloo Moraine.

While speaking at Queen’s Park on Tuesday, Clancy highlighted that despite significant water capacity challenges in the area, the provincial government continues to permit corporations to develop local wetlands and water resources.

“(The province) has sided with profit driven sprawl development. It has made it harder to build more gentle density in existing areas, which is the cheapest and fastest way to build more affordable homes.”

Clancy mentioned that she brought forth this motion to put residents’ access to water ahead of profits and seeks land use planning guidelines that are clear for landowners, municipalities, and provincial ministries.

She aims to end what she refers to as ‘reckless legislation’ that allows development on local wetlands without sufficient oversight.

“Our water is for our communities, our families, our farmers and our homes. Our water is not for gravel pit quarries to take over nine million litres a day. That’s enough to support over ten thousand residents whose wells are already drying up.”

This comes as The Region of Waterloo anticipates growing to one million residents by 2050, with an expected increase in drinking water usage as well.

It’s also important to note that Tuesday was the final day of the spring session for the Ontario Legislature as MPPs begin a 21-week break until late October.
