Mayor Elizabeth Roy stated that the Muslim Welfare Canada shelter in Whitby has provided assistance to thousands of women and children facing crises.

Recently, a post circulated on social media implying that the government is prioritizing funding for Muslim housing over Canadian Welfare Residences.

This post led to various comments criticizing the shelter.

In response, Mayor Roy released the following statement:

I want to take a moment to correct harmful misinformation circulating on social media about a valued community partner.

For over 30 years, Muslim Welfare Canada’s shelter in Whitby has supported thousands of women and children experiencing crisis, offering stability and hope during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. This shelter serves women and children of all races, ethnicities, faiths, and backgrounds. Its doors are open to anyone in need.

This is just one example of the life-changing work being done by Muslim Welfare Canada.

The organization also operates transitional housing in Whitby as well as food banks in Scarborough and Mississauga, Meals on Wheels for seniors across the GTA, meal programs for people facing food insecurity in communities like Malvern and Regent Park, and so much more.

In Clarington, work is underway on Muslim Welfare Canada’s new long-term care home. As our population ages, the need for compassionate, inclusive long-term care continues to grow, and this facility will help meet that need.

Muslim Welfare Canada’s vision of a world where all people live free from poverty aligns closely with the values we share here in Whitby and Durham Region. At a time when misinformation and division spread quickly online, it’s important that we respond with facts.

Thank you to Muslim Welfare Canada for all you do to strengthen our community.

On their website, Muslim Welfare Canada says the Whitby location helps women from all backgrounds facing homelessness and offers shelter for up to three years.

Each room is equipped with modern amenities. Residents also receive three daily meals along with comprehensive support services like mental health counseling and life skills training.
