The family of a man who lost his life in an assault in uptown Waterloo on Monday has confirmed his identity as 62-year-old Brian Donovan.

“Brian’s unexpected passing has left family, friends, and the wider community grappling with grief, yet his memory continues to shine through the lives he touched,” read an obituary posted Friday.

On Monday around 12:45 a. m. ET, police received a call about an assault at a business on King Street North near Young Street West.

Upon arrival, they found the 62-year-old man unconscious and with a head injury. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Unfortunately, he died the following day due to those injuries.

On Thursday, the Waterloo Regional Police Service’s (WRPS) major crime unit arrested a 37-year-old man from Kitchener and charged him with manslaughter.

He is currently in police custody awaiting a bail hearing.

Authorities believe this incident was isolated and that no weapons were involved.

WRPS spokesperson Cherri Greeno confirmed to that there was no prior connection between the two men.

‘A man who lived life fully’

In the obituary, family members described the assault as “senseless” and a “tragedy.”

“Despite the tragedy, tributes continue to pour in, highlighting the life Brian lived, rather than the circumstances of his death.”

Donovan was affectionately nicknamed “Bugs,” according to his family, who added that he was “a man who lived life fully and shared his joy generously.”

“He delighted in cooking for friends on his smoker, traveling to explore new places, and spending time with his beloved dogs, Axel and Archie,” the obituary said.

“His presence was marked by warmth, humor (sic), and a remarkable ability to make others feel valued and cared for. Friends recall his laughter, kindness, and steady companionship -qualities that left an enduring imprint on all who knew him.”
