A man from Brampton, Ontario, could face life in prison after admitting to trafficking up to US$17 million worth of meth and cocaine into Canada.

The FBI in Los Angeles reports that 62-year-old Guramrit Sidhu pleaded guilty on Thursday to one count of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise.

He is now looking at a minimum sentence of 20 years behind bars. The charge carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

According to the FBI’s news release on Thursday, Sidhu was the primary defendant in a federal indictment from January 2024 that included 23 counts against a drug trafficking ring. He has been in federal custody since October 2024 after being extradited from Canada.

As per his plea deal, from September 2020 until February 2023, he led a group that trafficked drugs from the U. S. into Canada.

Between Sept. 13, 2022, and Oct.24, 2022, Sidhu managed the distribution of eight separate shipments totaling about 523 kilograms of methamphetamine and 347 kilograms of cocaine.

Authorities seized those shipments and estimated their wholesale value to be around US$15 to US$17 million.

The FBI stated, “After buying the bulk quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine in the U. S., Sidhu arranged for the narcotics’ transportation into Canada via long-haul semi-trucks for further distribution.”

The agency added that “Sidhu provided telephone numbers and serial numbers on bills of currency for couriers to use as a ‘token’ for identification purposes during the delivery and transportation of the cocaine and methamphetamine.”

According to the FBI, Sidhu and his accomplices then picked up the drugs at various locations within Canada for further distribution.

This makes him the seventh defendant to plead guilty in this case. Others who have pleaded guilty received federal prison sentences ranging from 27 months to 108 months, according to the FBI.

Sidhu’s sentencing hearing is set for July 9.
