The Special Investigations Unit of Ontario has announced that a male officer from York Regional Police faces charges of sexual assault and breach of trust related to alleged incidents that occurred in Vaughan over a year ago.
In a news release on Wednesday, SIU director Joseph Martino stated that there are “reasonable grounds” to believe the officer committed criminal acts in December 2023.
The SIU was informed by police about the alleged offences on February 7, 2024. Following this notification, the SIU initiated an investigation which led to the two charges being filed. The SIU did not specify when these charges were officially laid.
The news release does not disclose the name or rank of the officer involved.
According to the SIU, the officer appeared in court for the first time at a Newmarket courtroom on June 24, 2025, with his next appearance scheduled for September 16, 2025 at the same location.
The announcement of these charges was delayed out of respect for the alleged victim’s well-being, according to information provided by the SIU.
“The SIU delayed this news release announcing the charges against the officer because of concerns raised about the potential impact on the complainant’s mental health caused by public disclosure of the charges,” said the SIU in their statement.
“Pursuant to section 33(2) of the Special Investigations Unit Act, 2019, the SIU is also omitting the official’s name from this public notice because of concerns that disclosure of the name may result in the identification of the complainant.”
The SIU mentioned it will not provide further comments on this investigation since it is currently before courts and they want to respect “fair trial interests” for those accused.
The SIU operates as an independent agency investigating police officers’ actions during incidents that could lead to death, serious injury, firearm discharges or allegations involving sexual assault.
