A section of road in Vaughan is closed for an unknown period following a sinkhole that appeared during Wednesday’s severe storm – a quick-moving downpour that caused flooding across the Greater Toronto Area and much of southern Ontario.
The sinkhole emerged near Rutherford Road and Huntington Road, which experienced significant rainfall as the storm moved through York Region.
City workers report that Huntington Road, from Rutherford Road to Trade Valley Drive, will stay closed for a long time while engineers evaluate the damage and see how much of the roadbed has been affected.
“With that much rainfall in a short period of time … it can really overwhelm infrastructure,” Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca told City News. “We have emergency crews and contractor partners who are working very hard to try to figure out the best way to get that repaired and get that road re-opened safely.”

The city hasn’t given an estimate for repairs, mentioning that the damage is significant enough to keep the road shut indefinitely. “Some roads remain closed, and we ask everyone to continue to use caution and avoid affected areas. I want to thank our dedicated City staff, Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service and York Regional Police, who have been working tirelessly around the clock to keep our residents safe and help our community recover,” Del Duca wrote on X. Drivers are advised to find alternate routes around the area, with signs posted at both ends of the closure.
