A troubling situation unfolded in Vaughan when a business near Islington Avenue and Kellam Street was targeted twice in April 2026. The first incident took place on April 18th, around 9:45 a. m., when an employee noticed the smell of gasoline. Though no fire was present, security footage later showed a suspect with a red jerrycan trying to ignite the building. The second attack occurred on April 22nd at about 5:30 a. m., where gunfire erupted at the entrance of the business. This time, the suspect fired seven shots before briefly entering the premises and leaving behind a small fire that extinguished itself.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported in either event. York Regional Police have shared video footage of the suspect, described as a Black man in his 40s, who wore different clothing during each attack. A black minivan with tinted windows, suspected to belong to the attacker, was seen at both locations. Authorities are asking for help from the public to obtain more footage and information.

Understanding Your Rights and Options

Business owners in Ontario should know they can seek compensation for property damage caused by criminal acts. This might include filing claims with insurance companies to cover repair expenses and any interruptions to their business operations due to these incidents. When facing criminal damage, it’s essential to collect all evidence and work closely with law enforcement to support possible claims or legal actions. The Limitations Act 2002 allows two years to file a lawsuit for property damage, giving you ample time to evaluate the full impact and gather necessary documentation.

If you find yourself impacted by similar events, it could be beneficial to speak with litigation lawyers who can help you understand your options for recovering damages and protecting your rights. Legal experts can guide you through submitting claims and pursuing any necessary legal steps to ensure your interests are safeguarded.
