Getty The Maple Leafs have received worrying news about Max Domi. The Toronto Maple Leafs might be without their key forward Max Domi for the full 2026-27 season. Toronto has announced that Domi is out indefinitely due to serious complications following an offseason back surgery. There’s no specific timeline for his return, but after the busy offseason, the SDPN podcast suggests it seems unlikely that Domi will play this season. “It’s pretty clear that Max Domi is not going to play,” Adam Wylde mentioned. “It’s looking more and more likely that it isn’t an option anymore,” Jesse Blake added regarding Domi’s potential to play this season. This perspective from the analysts makes sense since Toronto continues to seek additions to its roster. Additionally, the Maple Leafs are already over the salary cap, which means Domi will probably end up on long-term IR, allowing his cap hit not to count as long as he doesn’t take the ice this season. Domi is in the third year of a four-year, $15 million contract with the Maple Leafs. He serves as a valuable middle-six forward for Toronto, having recorded 12 goals and 24 assists for 36 points in 80 games last season. However, considering all of Toronto’s recent roster changes, it appears increasingly probable that he won’t see any action this season.

After free agency began on July 1, Toronto’s GM John Chayka provided some insight into Domi’s situation. During an appearance on Real Kyper & Bourne, Chayka mentioned that while Domi is making progress, a clearer understanding of his recovery timeline will come at training camp. “He’s progressing, which is the best news for everyone. He’ll come to camp. We’ll get kind of a more firm view at that point. I think Max is gonna be a big part of this; when that occurs is just a guess,” Chayka said. This statement marks a shift from what Chayka shared earlier in June at the NHL scouting combine. “Max is a tough situation; obviously he’s a special person and loves the Leafs, and we love him,” said Chayka. “He had a procedure that didn’t go as we had hoped. He played through some injuries… tough kid, but ultimately we’ll get to training camp and assess him from there..
