The federal government is kicking off public consultations regarding the future of Toronto’s island airport, which the province aims to expand for jet traffic.

Recently, Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservative government passed new legislation that allows it to take over the City of Toronto’s role in a tripartite agreement managing the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.

This agreement now involves the province, the federal government, and the Toronto Port Authority, which operates as a federal agency.

Last week, Prime Minister Mark Carney mentioned he hasn’t made up his mind about Ford’s expansion plans for the airport and promised comprehensive consultations on the proposal. Transportation Minister Steven Mac Kinnon and other Liberal MPs from Toronto have not committed publicly yet.

Transport Canada has launched public consultations on what lies ahead for the airport, inviting all Canadians to participate online or by mail until July 24.

The department is looking for input on various topics including noise levels, environmental impact, economic factors, and quality of life in surrounding neighborhoods.

It emphasizes that feedback collected during this consultation will “play an important role in informing the Government of Canada’s decision-making on the way forward.”

Transport Canada will publish a report summarizing what they learn from public input.
