TILLSONBURG – Careless smoking has been identified as the cause of an apartment fire in this Southwestern Ontario town that has forced many of the building’s residents out for several weeks now.
“The cause was determined to be smoking materials, which ignited some flooring or bedding materials,” Tillsonburg fire Chief Shane Caskanette said.
The fire started early on March 8 on the fourth floor of the six-storey apartment building at 195 Lisgar Ave. in this town southeast of London.
A resident of the building, who asked not to be named, mentioned that there is still a security guard at the site. Residents were allowed to return briefly to collect some belongings, but they can’t stay in the building right now. Repair work is ongoing but there’s no clear timeline for when it will be completed.
According to Caskanette, there was a functioning fire alarm system in the building.

“I definitely encourage our residents to ensure they have working smoke alarms and (carbon monoxide) alarms. That’s one of the key things people can do to ensure their safety and the safety of their families,” he said.
Firefighters rescued about 16 individuals from their balconies after hallways and stairwells filled with smoke. There was considerable water damage to units on lower floors, along with smoke damage throughout the building, Caskanette reported.
Oxford County officials have been available to help residents since the incident. The Salvation Army provided support by supplying food and other essential items for those affected.
