Two individuals were hospitalized following a fire at an apartment complex on east Hamilton Mountain early Friday morning, though details about their injuries remain unclear.

Emergency responders were called just before 7:30 a. m. to reports of a fire at the residential building located at 21 Ben Lomond Pl., situated above the Sherman Access.

The Hamilton Fire Department has indicated that the initial cause of the fire may be linked to overheated batteries from an electric scooter that was charging inside one of the apartments, but this has yet to be confirmed.

The blaze occurred in a unit on the ninth floor. Firefighters managed to control the flames while also working to ventilate and clear out substantial smoke that had spread across multiple floors, prompting residents to either evacuate or stay where they were.

A resident shared footage with CHCH News and reported hearing popping sounds reminiscent of fireworks during the incident.

“I look out my window and I see smoke coming up, so then I go out on my balcony to see where it’s from, and it’s almost all of it,” said Brian Riess, who has lived in the building for seven years. “It’s just one apartment unit over, and it was quite the blaze – I could see flames coming out and everything as the fire burned on, there was an explosion – a big bang, and then a few minutes later, you could hear something like a bunch of little pops, like fireworks were going off, but I don’t know. I thought, ‘oh, maybe he’s got a bunch of batteries lying around – mall batteries or something’,”

The unit sustained considerable damage from fire, heat, and smoke; estimates place the damages around $500,000.
