Residents Urged to Report Suspicious Behavior in Shuniah

Residents Urged to Report Suspicious Behavior in Shuniah

Authorities are looking into a potential attempted break-in on Mc Kenzie Beach Avenue, along with claims of unknown individuals knocking on doors or wandering around residential properties during the nighttime hours.

Police Respond to Mc Kenzie Beach Avenue Residence

Officers from the Thunder Bay OPP detachment were dispatched to a residence on Mc Kenzie Beach Avenue around 2:36 a. m. on Sunday, July 26.

The homeowner informed officers that an unidentified person seemed to be trying to gain entry into the home.

The individual had left before law enforcement arrived. Police conducted a search of the nearby area but did not find anyone.

The resident also mentioned that this was the second consecutive night unknown people had been present on the property.

Similar Incidents Shared Online

The OPP acknowledged they are aware of similar occurrences being posted on social media, involving unknown individuals knocking on doors late at night or hanging around residential areas in Shuniah.

Police have shared images of the person or persons they wish to identify.

Anyone who recognizes someone from these images or has any video footage, such as surveillance or doorbell cameras, related to these incidents is encouraged to reach out to investigators.

Criminal Code Overview

No charges have been filed yet.

Section 348 of the Criminal Code pertains to breaking and entering with intent to commit an indictable offence, committing an indictable offence after entering, or escaping after committing – or planning to commit – an indictable offence.

A completed break-in involving a dwelling is considered an indictable offence with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Section 24 defines an attempt as any action taken toward committing an intended crime. According to section 463, attempting a crime that carries a maximum life sentence is itself classified as an indictable offence with a maximum sentence of 14 years.

These represent maximum penalties and not guaranteed sentences. Any sentencing following a conviction would depend on various factors including evidence, circumstances surrounding the crime, prior criminal records, and other aggravating or mitigating elements.

Any individual identified, arrested, or charged related to this investigation is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
