Thunderstorm Alerts Issued for Northwestern Ontario

Severe thunderstorm watches are now in effect for much of northwestern Ontario, as strong winds and large hail may occur late Monday afternoon and into the evening. These yellow-level alerts, which were first announced early Monday afternoon, indicate potential wind gusts reaching up to 110 km/h along with hail that could be as big as “ping pong balls,” according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Severe thunderstorm watches are currently active across a significant portion of northwestern Ontario, warning about strong winds and large hail expected late Monday afternoon and evening.

The yellow-level alerts issued earlier today warn residents of wind gusts that could reach up to 110 km/h and the possibility of “ping pong ball-sized” hail, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

“Utility outages are possible,” the alert states. “Be prepared for severe weather. If threatening weather approaches, take cover in a basement or an interior room. If you’re outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail.”

The communities affected include:

Armstrong – Auden – Wabakimi Park. Atikokan – Shebandowan – Quetico Park. Beardmore – Jellicoe – Macdiarmid. Big Trout Lake – Kasabonika. City of Thunder Bay. Cloud Bay – Dorion. Dryden – Vermilion Bay. Ear Falls – Perrault Falls – Western Lac Seul. Fort Frances – Emo – Rainy River. Fort Hope – Lansdowne House – Ogoki. Gull Bay – Black Sturgeon Lake. Ignace – English River. Kakabeka Falls – Whitefish Lake – Arrow Lake. Nipigon – Rossport. Pickle Lake – Cat Lake. Pikangikum – Poplar Hill – Mac Dowell. Sandy Lake – Weagamow Lake – Deer Lake. Savant Lake – Sturgeon Lake. Seine River Village – Mine Centre. Sioux Lookout – Eastern Lac Seul. Summer Beaver – Wunnummin Lake – Kingfisher Lake. Upsala – Raith. Webequie.

Residents are urged to secure any loose items around their properties and stay cautious about potential damage or injuries caused by lightning and large hail.
