Thunder Bay – NEWS – Ontario is putting over $3.4 million into 12 manufacturing businesses through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, aiming to help them grow, acquire new equipment, and enhance their operations.

The province anticipates that these projects will generate around 80 jobs while improving production capabilities and lessening reliance on external suppliers.

For Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario, this move highlights the province’s commitment to bolstering local manufacturing during a time when U. S. tariffs and disruptions in supply chains are increasing challenges for sectors like mining, forestry, construction, and heavy industry across the North.

Funding Aims at Northern Manufacturing Growth

This funding is being provided via the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, commonly referred to as NOHFC.

Ontario states that this financial support will assist northern manufacturers in acquiring new equipment, expanding their facilities, and increasing in-house production.

Among the 12 companies receiving assistance, three notable examples include:

Jennmar Canada Ltd. in Sudbury will get $400,000 to expand its facility, boost production capacity, and create more steel products on-site. R. F. Contracting Inc. in Sault Ste. Marie is set to receive $379,619 for constructing a new workshop along with purchasing pipe and metal fabrication tools. Andy’s Trailers & Manufacturing Inc. in Timmins has been awarded $319,054 for buying equipment and upgrading buildings aimed at increasing the output of heavy-haul trailers used by industries like mining and forestry.

The official announcement from the province doesn’t list all 12 companies getting funding.

Lessening Dependence on U. S. Suppliers

The province views these investments as a way to address trade uncertainties alongside U. S. tariffs.

Jennmar Canada notes that this expansion will allow it to shift some production from the United States back to Canada-specifically friction bolts needed for mining ground-support systems.

This shift holds significant importance for Northern Ontario’s resource-driven economy.

Industries such as mining, forestry, and heavy construction depend heavily on specialized equipment as well as fabricated steel products and industrial services. By producing more of these items within Northern Ontario itself, companies can better insulate themselves from currency fluctuations or delays at borders due to tariffs.

Mining and Forestry Supply Chains Could Gain

Many of the funded businesses cater directly to industries critical throughout Northwestern Ontario.

For instance , Andy ’s Trailers creates trailers utilized in logging , mining , and transporting heavy equipment. p >

R. F. Contracting offers services like mechanical work , piping , ironworking , millwrighting , and custom steel fabrication. p >

These are exactly what’s required for mine development , maintenance of mills , forestry tasks , roadwork projects, and industrial growth across Northwestern Ontario. p >

Even if some funded manufacturers operate outside Thunder Bay alone expanded productivity strengthens overall supply chains within northern regions. p ><h3 dir =" auto " data – section-id =" 1nunwdsWhat It Means For Thunder Bay h3 >< p dir =" autoThunder Bay acts as a crucial service hub supplying resources needed by sectors such as mining, farming, and transportation. p >

With advancing infrastructure projects including new roads mines etc., the need for fabricated materials mechanical services, and specialized maintenance should rise significantly. p >

The potential opportunity here hinges upon whether local firms manage compete effectively while securing additional NOHFC funds enabling further growth throughout Northwestern Ontario. ps ><
