According to the most recent report from Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) released Sunday night, there are currently 59 active wildfires in northwestern Ontario. This is a significant drop from the 130 fires that were active in the region on August 1.

Among these fires, four are not under control, four are being held, 12 are under control, and the remaining fires are being monitored. The observed fires do not pose any threat to people, property, or infrastructure but continue to be watched by fire management teams.

As of Sunday evening, two new fires have been confirmed in the northwest:

Kenora 34 (KEN034) is located on an island on Cameron Lake approximately southeast of Sioux Narrows. This 0.1 hectare fire is currently not under control. Dryden 66 (DRY066) is near Brownie Lake in Blue Lake Provincial Park, about 7 kilometers west of the campground area. This fire spans 0.1 hectares and is being held.

The forest fire hazard level remains mostly low across northwestern Ontario, though there are areas of high hazard in the far northern district.

Significant Fires in the Region

The Rinker Complex: Comprising Thunder Bay 36, Dryden 34, and Dryden 35 – continues to be one of the largest firefighting operations within the region. Thunder Bay 36 covers an area of 301,240 hectares; Dryden 34 spans 45,800 hectares; and Dryden 35 is at 30,158 hectares. All three fires remain uncontrolled although wildfire activity across this complex has been low.

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services announced last week that command over Rinker Complex fires has shifted from a specialized incident management team to the Thunder Bay Fire Management Headquarters for ongoing firefighting efforts.

In an email sent to on Friday, Fire Information Officer Chris Marchand stated “weeks of sustained firefighting efforts combined with recent rainfall are supporting the gradual demobilization of fire operations,” around the Rinker Complex.

The complex’s fires may stay active for some time “due to the extensive area affected,” however they “do not currently pose a risk to public safety.”

AFFES indicated that as more suppression milestones are achieved in coming days, there will be a reduction in both staff and aircraft assigned to this complex. Firefighting crews from Mexico who had been assisting were expected to begin returning home last week.

A Notice to Air Missions or NOTAM remains active for Thunder Bay 36.

Meanwhile, operations around another notable cluster of fires have also seen a decrease recently. The incident management team overseeing the Atikokan Cluster was demobilized last week as command transitioned back to Fort Frances Fire Management Headquarters. The Atikokan Cluster includes Fort Frances Fires known as numbers 13, 14 and 15.

An update posted on August 17 on Ontario Forest Fires Facebook page noted that another group known as Highway 599 Cluster including Sioux Lookout Fires numbered at 84 through 89 is now under control.

Evacuees Making Their Way Home

As reported by Prepared Ontario last Friday all wildfire evacuees from these communities have returned home:

Eabametoong First Nation. Gull Bay First Nation. Lac Des Mille Lacs First Nation. Lac La Croix First Nation.

“Thank you host communities of Fort Frances, Kenora, Niagara Falls and Thunder Bay for helping to #Protect Ontario,” said a message shared by the province on Facebook.

Status of Evacuations

A restricted fire zone covering parts of northwestern Ontario and a small section of northeast was officially lifted at exactly midnight ET on Thursday August 20.

The province also revoked implementation orders and evacuation notices surrounding Thunder Bay areas numbered at 36 and 56 along with Dryden numbers 34 and 35 on Thursday August 20.

This month saw earlier lifting of evacuation alerts issued for Fort Frances number-39 as well as Minnesota’s “Thumb Fire.”

Those still under evacuation orders must leave their locations while those who received alerts should prepare themselves for possible evacuations. Implementation orders indicate travel limitations within certain zones.

Assessing Property Damage

During a press conference held earlier this month where provincial officials provided updates regarding wildfires’ status , Mike Harris – Minister Of Natural Resources mentioned they’ve begun early assessments concerning property damages resulting from these wildfires now that situations appear more stable

.

“My ministry is also conducting assessment flights to document property damage and loss. Impacted property owners can contact211  to receive information from our ministry staff and support on next steps,” he explained further.

The Ministry works closely alongside Namaygoosisagagun First Nation focusing restoration efforts towards road leading into landing sites connecting community members. Additionally their engineers plan improvements facilitating construction timelines involving bridge repairs necessary here.

Together they’re collaborating with camps , tourist operators along similar stakeholders enabling them return safely assess damages incurred during period while ensuring proper care taken too protect families involved & pets too if needed.

Highways Now Open Again

The province’s interactive highway map confirms lifting closures previously placed along Highways number-527 & number-811 now back operational again.
