An investigation found that the company frequently bought cattle from Jan. 1 to April 30, 2026, without having the necessary license.
A meat processing facility in Simcoe County has been fined $25,000 for operating as a cattle dealer without the required dealer’s license.
L& M Meat Distributing was convicted on Sept. 29; the announcement was made on Oct. 23.
According to a statement from the ministry, in April 2026, the Compliance Enforcement and Intelligence Unit of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness received a complaint claiming that L& M Meat Distributing 2021 Inc. was buying cattle for slaughter without holding the appropriate dealer’s license.
The investigation revealed that the company consistently purchased cattle between Jan. 1 and April 30, 2026, without possessing the required license.
The purchases took place through four livestock sales barns in Ontario: Kawartha Lakes Community Sales Barn (Lindsay); Hoards Station Sales Barn (Campbellford); Ontario Stockyard Inc. (Cookstown); Brussels Livestock (Brussels).
L& M Meat Distributing 2021 Inc. pleaded guilty to all four charges across four separate Provincial Offences Court jurisdictions (Goderich, Cobourg, Barrie and Lindsay) and faced a total fine of $25,000 plus an additional victim fine surcharge of $6,250.
The company’s website states that two generations of the L& M family have managed this business for over five decades.
The website mentions that they “hand-selects the finest Ontario-raised meats.”
“We work directly with local farms across the Greater Toronto Area and Southern Ontario who share our commitment to quality, sustainability, and ethical practices,” says their website.
The site proudly claims they have skilled butchers in Toronto, Beeton, and Gilford.
