At only 18, Daunte Hillen is campaigning for a position on Hamilton’s public school board.
The Mc Master University student mentioned that some have suggested he should wait until he’s older to run.
“I don’t want my age to be a barrier,” said Hillen, who just finished high school.
Hillen is one of the candidates seeking the trustee role for the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) in Hamilton’s municipal election on Oct. 26, which typically gets less attention than races for mayor and council.
Running in Wards 8 and 14, Hillen believes that his experience as an Indigenous student trustee shows how essential it is for young people to influence decisions about their education.
“It’s not whether youth are ready to do the work today,” he stated. “It’s whether we’re going to be given the chance to lead.”
Candidates Address Challenges Faced by Students and Families
Meagan Shanahan, a registered social worker and mother of three, is also running for office for the first time. She’s a candidate in HWDSB’s Ward 3.
Her background working with vulnerable groups has shaped her understanding of the issues facing students and families today.
While canvassing, Shanahan has heard worries about student disengagement, violence in schools, funding for special education, and support for teachers.
“I’ve been having a lot of conversations with folks at the door [about] how we can increase services when we only have a certain amount of money available,” she shared.
She aims to leverage her social work expertise along with public administration skills to strengthen partnerships between schools and community organizations.
“I take a very systemic view of what barriers are facing our students and families,” she explained.
Shanahan noted that some residents aren’t clear on what trustees do or if they should vote if they don’t have kids in school.
She emphasized that trustees represent the whole community-not just parents with children enrolled in schools.
“[We all] want educated youth that are going to grow up to become educated adults,” Shanahan added.
Anthony Chepil, another newcomer on the ballot, said he decided to run partly because he has a grandchild getting ready to start school.
Chepil, who previously worked as a retail consultant, is competing for Ward 2. He expressed concern over teachers’ working conditions and how staff burnout affects students’ learning experiences.
“We have some great teachers out there, but they’re burnt out because they’re having to do too much,” Chepil stated. “We’re making it too complicated for them.”
Chepil wants trustees focused on decisions that enable teachers while fostering better environments for students-all while managing finances wisely.”
”We listen closely during budget discussions so we can make choices based on what’s best for our system,” he explained.”
Other first-time candidates include Frank Crowder from United Steelworkers local 7135 running in Ward 2; toxicologist Seth Floyd running in Ward 7; and Jessica Bonilla-Damptey from The Sexual Assault Centre Hamilton aiming at wards 8 and 14 within Catholic District School Board.” P>
