St. Catharines councillors voted unanimously Monday to start the process of possibly changing the name of a residential street named after Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

The motion, introduced by Mayor Mat Siscoe, suggests reviewing and considering renaming Prince Andrew Court. This includes public consultation with local residents and stakeholders, as well as having staff provide recommendations, which will cover alternative names and any financial or administrative impacts.

An amendment added during Monday night’s meeting will require staff to also report on policies related to street renaming and scenarios involving city assets.

Siscoe told last Thursday that Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest was the tipping point for him.

“St. Catharines councillors and I have been having discussions for some time about whether the court should be renamed,” he said in a statement.

“Given today’s news of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest, I would say there is no reason to continue discussing.”

Mountbatten-Windsor, who used to be a prince but lost his royal titles due to his connections with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, was arrested on February 19 on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

He was released later that day after spending 11 hours in custody; Thames Valley Police stated he remains under investigation.

While Mountbatten-Windsor has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing related to his friendship with Epstein, questions about their connection have troubled the Royal Family for over ten years.

Siscoe mentioned that St. Catharines council must ensure municipal place names represent community values and uphold public trust in civic institutions.

A number of Canadian municipalities have locations named after Andrew, with St. Catharines being one of the latest looking into renaming options.

In August 2022, Prince Andrew High School in Dartmouth, N. S., changed its name to Woodlawn High School.

The Mississauga city council passed a motion in November 2025 aiming to remove the Duke of York Boulevard name associated with the former prince. This included taking down all plaques and non-critical signage linked to him on city property.

The late Queen Elizabeth II made her second son give up royal duties and stop his charitable work back in 2019 after he attempted to justify his ties with Epstein during an infamous interview with the BBC.

B ut more information about their relationship came out last year in a book publication that led Charles to take away his title of prince and require him to relocate.
