The Ontario NDP and Progressive Conservatives successfully held onto their seats during a trio of provincial byelections on Thursday.
The NDP claimed victory in Scarborough Southwest, while the Progressive Conservatives secured wins in Hamilton East-Stoney Creek and York-Simcoe.
Premier Doug Ford was present in Hamilton to congratulate his candidate, Jeff Beattie, following his win.
“I just want the people of Ontario and all of Canada to know that we’re going to continue to fight,” he stated outside the PC victory party. “We’re going to fight against Donald Trump. We’re going to make sure that we protect people’s jobs, protect their communities and protect them, and we’re going to continue doing that.”
Ford held a press conference in Hamilton on Aug. 24 just hours after telling Donald Trump to “kiss (his) ass” regarding the president’s tariff threat.
He returned to the area to unveil a “Lake Ontario Now and Always” sign after Trump signed an order renaming it “Lake America” as an apparent act of retribution.
Monique Taylor, a former MPP who ran for the NDP in the riding but lost to Beattie, suggested that the conflict with Trump benefited the PCs.
“I think he played that card again, and it worked for him, right?”
Scarborough Southwest
The NDP maintained control of Scarborough Southwest with Fatima Shaban winning Thursday’s provincial byelection and reclaiming the seat for her party months after former MPP Doly Begum left the NDP to run for federal Liberals.
Shaban garnered over 40 percent of the vote and led Liberal candidate Ahsanul Hafiz by more than 2,200 votes based on unofficial results from Election Ontario.
“I am feeling absolutely amazing. I am just so grateful to my team. We have worked incredibly hard,” Shaban remarked following her win.
“I was able to connect with the people of Scarborough Southwest. I grew up here. I’m raising my family here. I have dedicated my life to this community. They know that I’m there constant, that they trust me, and that I’m going to do right by them,” she added.
Shaban’s win comes amid intense competition in the riding, with high stakes for all major political parties in Ontario.
Sarborough Southwest has been an NDP stronghold since 2018 when Begum unseated a long-serving Liberal incumbent. She won re-election in 2022 as well as again in 2025 provincial election.
In that most recent election cycle, Begum secured nearly 43 percent of votes, finishing about 12 points ahead of Progressive Conservatives while Liberals took third place.
This political landscape shifted significantly earlier this year when Begum stepped down from her provincial role for a federal bid – which she won handily during an April byelection with nearly 70 percent support. This was a crushing loss for federal NDP candidate Shaban who received less than six percent of votes then.
“I think that was a very different election in a very different circumstance,” opposition NDP Leader Marit Stiles commented before results were announced. “And this riding has been solidly NDP for eight years.”
“She’s known in the community for being someone who really works hard for people,” Stiles noted further.
Shaban emphasized she didn’t “run to win” back then either.
“Federally, the NDP was struggling. There were so many things happening before then. I ran campaigns out of my own living room. I didn’t run just to win; I wanted a platform for important issues we had here now with our entire team supporting us through an amazing campaign,” she said while noting they knocked on around 170 thousand doors during their efforts.
The Liberals aimed at capitalizing on Begum’s overwhelming federal success – trying make their case compelling enough so voters might consider switching back from NDP towards them at Queen’s Park too:
The Liberal side hoped Begum could boost their campaign traction but confirmed both parties saw little involvement from her during this race thus far.
Hafiz first triumphed over fierce competition within Liberal nomination rounds where he narrowly beat out former federal MP Nate Erskine-Smith by just nineteen votes; Erskine-Smith previously eyed using this provincial seat potentially launching toward leading positions within Ontario’s Liberal leadership circle.
For Progressive Conservatives attempting new grounds are not typical strongholds still; however byelections provided chances building upon unexpected successes achieved last time around when they placed second overall despite weaknesses shown throughout various Toronto regions overall performance-wise.
This time representing party candidate Dr. Noor Tarun is local physician previously running Conservatively within region across past two federal elections recently.
Recent announcements made by Ford’s government involved few related specifically targeting areas across Scarborough like announcing $15 million aid funding supporting four primary care teams right before setting forth official calls relating electoral proceedings back earlier starting August fifth days prior officially calling those elections’ commencement period altogether.
Hamilton East – Stoney Creek
Beattie managed holding onto Hamilton East – Stoney Creek securing thirty-nine percent vote shares standing six points clear above competing NDPer challengers making headway towards gaining ground collectively speaking.
Taylor once served formerly as MPP representing neighboring territory known primarily via previous tenure lasting between two-thousand eleven until twenty-twenty-five until transitioning into more broadly encompassing realms federally yet fell short thereafter facing defeat instead elsewhere subsequently facing strong union endorsements leading up eventually towards these most recent events occurring lately.
