Sunset Beach in St. Catharines is closed after the water tested for “unacceptable” levels of E. coli.(Duncan Pitkeathly/CHCH News) This week, four beaches in the Niagara Region have been closed, with three affected by high E. coli levels and one suffering from damage due to high Lake Ontario water levels. Sunset Beach near Port Weller Harbour in St. Catharines, Queen’s Royal Beach in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and Sherkston Elco in Port Colborne are all shut down after a recent test showed elevated bacteria levels. Sunset Beach had just reopened a few weeks ago following renovations for a multimillion-dollar improvement project this year. Nelles Beach in Grimsby is also closed because rising Lake Ontario water levels have submerged and damaged local structures like stairs and accessibility ramps. Grimsby officials stated that the town is “not in a position to comment on current water quality results or related advisories.” You can find updates on the beach water testing status for the 19 beaches in the Niagara Region online.
