Chelsea Tolles fined $2,500, sentenced to one year on probation and prohibited from owning, having custody or care of, or residing with any animal for two years
A woman from Barrie was convicted last month on three counts related to animal cruelty.
On March 6, Chelsea Tolles appeared in a courtroom in Barrie and was found guilty of allowing an animal to be in distress, not following proper care standards by failing to provide suitable sanitary conditions and ignoring an order, as stated by the Solicitor General’s office on Wednesday.
No specific details were given about what occurred or the type of animal(s) involved.
Tolles was fined $2,500, given a one-year probation sentence and is barred from owning, having custody of, or living with any animals for two years.
Tolles must also give up any animals she currently has and notify Animal Welfare Services of any address changes during the court order period.
The Ontario government noted that the PAWS Act took effect on January 1, 2020, making Ontario the first province in Canada to set up a complete provincial system for enforcing animal welfare to improve safety for animals.
As of February 2026, Ontario’s Animal Welfare Services has issued over 18,100 distress orders, laid more than 2,300 charges under the PAWS Act and rescued over 15,100 animals from situations causing them distress that affected their welfare.
