Barrie police have charged a 36-year-old man from the area after a video allegedly showing him driving over 135 kilometres per hour on city streets was shared on social media on Sunday.

The driver uploaded a video to Instagram on March 22, where he can be seen speeding and displaying dangerous behavior, as stated by law enforcement.

An officer had already stopped the same driver earlier that day due to reckless driving, and upon seeing the video online, recognized unique features such as tattoos and vehicle details that supposedly connect the video to this person.

The footage in question, recorded on February 20 at around 3:30 a. m., captures the driver racing through a residential area along Leacock Drive at speeds exceeding 135 km/h in a zone with a limit of 50 km/h.

According to police, the video shows the driver holding his cellphone while speeding and not stopping at a stop sign at Letitia Street.

Officers confirmed the location of this incident by identifying several landmarks visible in the footage, including a shopping plaza and parts of the city skyline.

No pedestrians or other vehicles are seen in the recording; however, police noted that “extreme speed and distracted driving” created serious risks for public safety.

<p Following their investigation, the Barrie man has been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle. He also faces charges for using a handheld communication device while driving, stunt driving, and failing to stop at a stop sign.

The police highlighted that material shared online can serve as evidence in criminal cases.

Residents are reminded that sharing videos of illegal activities may lead to charges and legal repercussions.

If anyone has information regarding dangerous driving incidents, they can contact Barrie police at 705-725-7025.
