A group of energy companies has received approval to move forward with a battery energy storage system project in Norfolk County.
Partners Aecon Concessions, Six Nations Group, the Mississaugas of the Credit Business Corporation, Sitka Power Inc., and NRStor have signed an agreement with Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to build, own, and operate a 150 MW/1,200 MWh battery energy storage facility.
This 20-year agreement allows the partnership to earn capacity payments from the IESO, along with extra income from selling energy into the province’s electricity grid.
“The Simcoe Battery Project will strengthen grid reliability and support the integration of renewable generation, helping to provide the resilient energy foundation and critical storage capacity required to support economic growth and meet Ontario’s growing electricity demand,” said Stee Nackan, president of Aecon Concession.
Aecon, along with Six Nations Group and Mississaugas of the Credit Business Corporation, was part of a team that built and now runs the Oneida Energy Storage Project near Jarvis which started operations in May 2025.
The four-hectare (10-acre) Oneida site is Canada’s largest battery energy storage system, valued at $700 million and able to deliver 250 MW of electricity per hour – for four hours – to the province’s grid.
The Simcoe battery energy storage system is expected to begin operations in 2030.
