[ad_1]Candidates for Ward 3 of Norfolk County Council are (left to right) Chris Gill, Doug Moyaert, and Hetty Verlinden.Chris GillAge: 59Occupation: Civil engineering, utility construction managementRelevant experience: I’ve helped coordinate and plan large-scale infrastructure, road, and public/private utility projects. Chairman of the Ride for Dad charity team, raising funds in the fight against prostate cancer; board member with Crime Stoppers in the Greater Hamilton Area.Residence: DelhiWhat do you think is the biggest issue facing Norfolk County? Our community needs future-ready infrastructure. High property taxes and increasing water rates put real pressure on homeowners, so we need practical solutions.By investing in infrastructure and planning wisely, we can promote smart growth that expands our tax base without compromising our community. A solid infrastructure foundation can also draw new job opportunities, including canning and freezing facilities that keep agricultural products processed locally.Let’s build the necessary infrastructure, support local employment, enhance our agricultural economy, and ensure a sustainable future for our community. If the county received $10 million to spend, how would you suggest using it?Infrastructure and housing.I would focus on roads and water/wastewater capacity to prepare Norfolk's infrastructure for responsible growth. I’d also allocate funds toward housing-enabling infrastructure and partnerships aimed at increasing affordable housing options. With over 400 households currently waiting for housing assistance, we need to take action. The aim is to support housing initiatives, attract jobs and investments, expand our tax base while protecting taxpayers’ interests by spending every dollar wisely.Norfolk has some of the highest water rates in the province; what’s your solution as more upgrades are needed?Water rates and infrastructure.Families shouldn’t have to choose between paying their water bills or buying groceries. We need a long-term strategy for high water rates while maintaining and upgrading our systems. As Ward 2 councillor, I’d advocate for a thorough review of water/wastewater operations as well as costs related to infrastructure debt and future capital requirements. It’s essential to find efficiencies that prioritize key upgrades while pursuing every provincial and federal funding opportunity available.Doug MoyaertAge: 65Occupation: Retired from provincial government of Ontario,Relevant experience: I spent 34 years working across three different ministries before retiring from youth justice.Residence: DelhiWhat do you think is the most urgent issue facing Norfolk County?I believe rising property taxes along with increasing water rates and deteriorating roads are major concerns here in Norfolk County. If the county got $10 million to spend, how would you recommend using it?I’d use half of that money for debt reduction while dedicating the other five million towards restoring essential infrastructure.Norfolk has one of Ontario’s highest water rates; what’s your approach toward this problem? To lower our water bills effectively means bringing more users into the system without crowding urban areas further during development-this will help maintain agricultural lands while minimizing costs by utilizing existing systems already set up.Hetty VerlindenAge : 55Occupation : Fruit farmerRelevant experience : I've been involved in my family business for over thirty years now , taking care of growing , sales , HR , food safety , shipping management , plus I'm co-owner. I hold a degree in graphic design focusing on advertising along with another degree in business marketing. I'm also part of parent council at Our Lady Of La Salette School , Delhi District Secondary School , Delhi Kin Club.Residence : Windham Centre. What do you feel is the most pressing issue facing Norfolk County ?Tax payers all around Norfolk County are feeling increased pressure from growing municipal expenses. Property taxes keep climbing higher , while both water & wastewater fees have jumped significantly - many families struggle just to keep up. Residents see that aging roads & bridges require investment & major improvements within our water systems are necessary too. But they also realize that these financial responsibilities seem heavily concentrated on a small rural tax base. The main concern here comes down affordability ; people want dependable services but expect each dollar spent should be managed efficiently - they seek assurances regarding long-term planning which eases burdens faced by families , farmers & businesses alike. Tax payers desire clear priorities alongside responsible spending plus an effective plan balancing essential infrastructures against resident affordability. If given $10 million by county officials how would those funds be allocated ?My focus is straightforward : invest where it’ll save taxpayers significant amounts over time !I'd direct most resources into critical infrastructures first since targeting improvements allows us tackle high-risk assets now instead waiting until double expenses later down line! Additionally I would dedicate funding towards modernizing outdated wastewater systems - With residents carrying some hefty charges among highest anywhere around Ontario strategic upgrades could alleviate operating costs significantly helping ease household bills directly too! Allocating remaining finances toward economic development efforts such expanding serviced land broadband access supporting local businesses thrives ! Reducing residential tax pressures requires boosting commercial/industrial bases thereby lessening burdens seen throughout communities overall! Lastly if there happens still remain any extra left reserve portion invested back into community facilities improving quality life long term benefiting population growth sustainability goals moving forward ! My methodology focuses strictly disciplined decision making ensures where spent genuinely reduces future costs bolsters core services builds healthier fiscal path moving ahead together across Norfork area's residents alike! Considering again aforementioned challenges regarding high rate waters too -- what's resolution exactly here? Well reality stands truthfully within context - due existing multiple smaller aged-out systems running almost empty user bases leads steep pricing trend. So straightforward solution isn't merely quick fix rather necessitates carefully laid multi-step approach aimed lowering overall taxpayer liabilities longer term strategically speaking! First off capital infusion targeting pricey/failure-prone parts critical network must happen ; delaying fixes only drives operational expenses higher leading residents footing larger share bills ultimately.. Therefore swift action compulsory going forward! Next step entails consolidating operations modernizing them across board providing one centralized entity therefore cuts overhead drastically ! Five distinct sets managing same utilities results duplicated efforts driving up annual expenditures unnecessarily removing any chance efficiency gains altogether leaving consumers suffering repeatedly falling short covering basic necessities.. Most importantly however establishing synergies promoting standardized equipment automations goes far lengths decreasing ongoing outlays expected annually finally enabling tangible savings made afterwards therein ! Moreover cooperative outreach established among provincial-federal partners crucial rural territories cannot shoulder expensive multi-million dollar renovations alone hence determined pursuit grants directed specifically addressing infrastructural disparities pressing hard now upon us today persists endlessly demanding answers near future ahead otherwise left unaddressed forever potentially
