Officials have confirmed that the seat once occupied by Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario MPP Caroline Mulroney is now vacant following her resignation from the position.

Staff at Elections Ontario stated that, per provincial law, a byelection needs to be scheduled by December 2 at the latest.

As outlined in the Legislative Assembly Act, the earliest date for an election in the York-Simcoe riding is July 9, with the last possible date being December 31.

Mulroney, who was first elected in 2018 and held various cabinet roles under Premier Doug Ford’s administration, recently announced her decision to leave provincial politics to focus more on her family.

The York-Simcoe area encompasses communities such as Bradford West Gwillimbury, East Gwillimbury, Keswick, and Georgina.

Ford has not yet indicated when he plans to call the byelection.

This vacancy isn’t unique; another byelection will be called later this year for Scarborough Southwest after former Ontario NDP MPP Doly Begum resigned to run federally for the Liberal Party of Canada in the same riding. She won a seat in the House of Commons this past April.
