This initiative will introduce two new tracks at the Oshawa station, along with a fresh north platform, an extended south platform, pedestrian bridges, and a revamped bus loop. These enhancements aim to facilitate two-way, all-day GO train service on the Lakeshore East line and boost capacity as Durham Region continues its growth. During a press conference in Whitby on Wednesday, Ontario Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria mentioned that this project is part of a larger provincial strategy to expand public transit and alleviate congestion.

“Our government is making historic investments in public transit to cut commute times, fight gridlock and keep Ontario moving,” Sarkaria said.
The province hasn’t shared a specific timeline for when these upgrades at Oshawa station will be finished. When questioned about costs related to this work, Sarkaria noted that it falls under the broader $15.3-billion GO Expansion program without providing detailed budget figures.
The improvements will also incorporate infrastructure designed for future electrification, alongside a canopy and snow-melt system for the new north platform while enhancing accessibility features.
This expansion is anticipated to prepare the station for increased GO service levels, including extending the Lakeshore East line towards Bowmanville.
Earlier this year, Ontario broke ground on nearly 19 kilometers of new track for the Bowmanville GO extension. The province estimates that by 2041 this extension could accommodate around 17,000 daily trips and see approximately 4.9 million annual boardings.
Durham Regional Chair and CEO John Henry stated that these upgrades are necessary as more people move into the region.
“As Durham Region continues to grow, investments in frequent and accessible transit are essential to keeping our communities connected,” Henry remarked during the announcement. “The expansion at Durham College Oshawa GO Station will ensure our transportation network can meet the needs of current and future generations.”
Students and employees at Ontario Tech University are also expected to benefit from these improvements due to its proximity to Oshawa GO station.
Steven Murphy, president and vice-chancellor of Ontario Tech University believes improved GO services would enhance connections between Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Area along with Hamilton.
“Expanding two-way, all-day GO service will strengthen those connections – opening greater access to talent, research, and partnership while supporting Durham Region’s continued economic growth,” Murphy said in a statement.
Murphy also highlighted how their railway engineering specialization contributes towards developing skilled workers needed within Ontario’s transportation sector.
For many commuters in Durham Region, Oshawa station plays an important role within their regional transport network.
According to ministry reports, these upgrades are expected not only to boost capacity but also improve connections among trains operated by GO Transit buses along with local communities.
