The number of campsites at Pinery Provincial Park has been decreased as the Grand Bend site is updated to meet current Ontario Parks management standards.

In the past, there were more than 1,000 campsites in the provincial park.

In a message to Sarnia News Today, Park Superintendent Mark Custers mentioned that 52 campsites in an ecologically sensitive area were removed after the 2025 season.

“No further campsite reductions are planned, and work is underway to relocate a portion of the impacted sites to other development zones within the park,” said Custers.

The province is revising the existing Pinery Provincial Park Management Plan, which includes proposed zoning changes aimed at supporting sewage treatment infrastructure.

Custers stated that public feedback on the plan was gathered over a 45-day period, which ended on August 17.

“Comments are being reviewed alongside feedback from Indigenous communities and local stakeholders, which will help inform next steps regarding the Pinery Provincial Park Management Plan,” he said.

Other suggested updates in the plan include upgrades to Burley Bridge water control structure, adding to the development zone for an improved trailer sanitation station, and proposing a policy that bans motorboats in the Old Ausable Channel (OAC) while creating better access points for non-motorized crafts.

According to Pinery Provincial Park’s website, established in 1957, it also features 10 walking trails, a 14-kilometre bike trail and 38 kilometres of groomed ski trails.
