A paddleboarder has lost his life after encountering difficulties on Lake Simcoe during a severe thunderstorm late Wednesday afternoon.

South Simcoe Police (SSP) reported that they were alerted just after 5:10 p. m. following calls about a man on a paddleboard who was in trouble on Lake Simcoe near Mapleview Drive in Innisfil.

According to authorities, at the time of the incident, conditions had worsened quickly, with heavy rain and strong winds creating dangerous situations on the water. There was fear that the man had become stranded and couldn’t safely make it back to shore.

Around 5:35 p. m., members of the SSP Marine Unit, supported by the York Regional Police Marine Unit, began an extensive search of the area.

During their search, police found the paddleboard, leading them to widen their search efforts from that spot. The York Regional Police helicopter also joined in to help with locating him.

Then at around 8 p. m., the helicopter identified the body of a 38-year-old male in the water.

Police confirmed that he wasn’t wearing a life jacket when this happened.

“The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident remains ongoing. The identity of the deceased will not be released out of respect for the family’s privacy,” police stated in a news release.
