The school year has just started, and Windsor police have some advice for students using e-bikes to get to school.
More students are choosing e-bikes for their commutes, but not everyone knows the rules that come with it.
In Ontario, you need to be at least 16 years old to ride an e-bike. It’s also necessary to wear a proper helmet, whether it’s for a bike or motorcycle. However, there’s no need for a driver’s licence, vehicle registration, or insurance card.
An e-bike can only have a motor of up to 500 watts and shouldn’t exceed speeds of 32 kilometres per hour.
Riders must follow the same traffic laws as cyclists, which means obeying all signs and signals.
E-bikes aren’t allowed on sidewalks or on roads where bicycles are prohibited, like E. C. Row Expressway and Dougall Parkway between Roseland Drive East and the Sixth Concession.
“Vehicles that do not meet the definition of an e-bike may be subject to different licensing, registration and insurance requirements,” read a social media post from Windsor police.
