The City of Sarnia is gearing up for another busy year focused on improving its infrastructure, with various road, water, and sewer projects in progress.

This year features a historic $4.1-million Road Rehabilitation Program alongside other essential work, including:

Combined sewer separation (covering water, sewer, and road) on Ontario Street; Johnston Street; Queen Street; College Avenue; and George Street Pumping Station 16 capacity upgrades to help prevent flooding Complete reconstruction involving road, water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer on Copland Road and Kathleen Avenue Phase 1 work on Mitton Street for combined sewer separation and reconstruction

This initiative continues the city’s long-term commitment to infrastructure improvement.

Over the last five years, Sarnia has invested $262 million into capital projects-an increase of 34 percent in spending aimed at resurfacing roads, protecting shorelines, preventing floods, upgrading pumping stations, separating combined sewers, and replacing water/sewer lines.

From 2023 to 2026 across Sarnia, crews have replaced or installed:

17.4 km of watermains 7.7 km of sanitary sewer 3.5 km of forcemain 6.7 km of storm sewer

During that same timeframe, 89.2 km of road lanes have been resurfaced while 43.7 km have been completely rebuilt; also added were 13.3 km of multi-use paths and 6.5 km of bike lanes.

“It will certainly be a busy summer as we continue this effort to renew infrastructure; roads, water and sewer infrastructure continue to be a priority with the support of Council as identified in our Asset Management Plan,” said David Jackson, general manager of engineering and operations. “It can be disruptive at points but investments from resident tax and rate dollars such as these eliminate the need for costly repairs while strengthening infrastructure against flooding-ensuring our residents can count on reliable roads for travel; clean drinking water available at the tap; and safe removal of wastewater from neighborhoods.”
